Know About the Different Grass Types in Australia
The latest trend in decorating lawns is the inclusion of exotic
grasses from other continents into the environment of a different
country. But the biggest problem with these foreign species of grasses
is they require high maintenance cost. So, it is better to go for the
local species that are easily available and requires less maintenance
cost.
The grazing areas of Australia are covered with different species of
grasses. The local species of Australia have deep roots that help them
to tap more and more groundwater and hence require less watering and are
less vulnerable to extreme conditions. These grass species have adjusted
well to the climatic conditions of Australia, which is not a well
fertile soil.
Types of perennial grasses
There are two types of perennial grasses in Australia - the Cool Season
grass and the Warm Season grass.
The Cool Season grass remains green throughout the winter as long as
there is not a long gap between rainfalls. They are hard and can
tolerate extreme climatic conditions like drought and snowfall. Some of
the Cool Season grasses are:
- The Weeping Grass - This type of grass is mainly found in
the wet parts of Australia and New Zealand. This grass gives a
traditional look to the lawn and is tolerant to most of the types of
soil and soil with little salt content. The biggest problem with
these grasses is that they are vulnerable to continuous traffic over
them and has low tolerance for canine urine. However, you can mow
them to any length.

- The Wallaby Grass - They mostly occur in the temperate
lands of Australia. Bunched kind of grass, this type produces
feathery white seeds in the spring time and sometimes in autumn
also. You should mow this grass below 4 centimetres.
The Warm Season grass on the other hand grows well in warm
weathers and change the colour of the leaf in winters. They have
high tolerance for heat and drought conditions but cannot tolerate
frost. Some of the grasses are:
- Kangaroo Grass - This type is widely present in
Australia. It is generally a feathery type of grass. When the
grass ages, the leaves of the grass change its colour from green
to maroon and get brownish red seeds. You can mow them two times
a year.

- Red Grass - Mostly found in coastal and sloping
areas, this grass type is a running grass and spreads
underground stems at a slow pace. The leaves are reddish in
colour, but gives reddish-purple flowers in summer up to early
autumn.
Factors to consider before choosing the right grass types
Besides the appearance of the grass, there are other factors
that are needed to be considered before deciding on the
plantation type for your lawn. You should consider the climate
of the region, the amount of rainfall and sunlight the lawn is
going to receive, the nature of the soil, the amount of traffic
the lawn is going to receive and other factors.
